carolina cabin
floor plan
Eure, North Carolina — Under 1,000 ft², this modular cabin was concieved as a lightweight weekend retreat capable of DIY construction. In response to the specific site of the project (a small grove of trees in a large field), the cabin’s design focused on the two concepts of extending floor plane and completely opening the facades. The floor is elevated to the level of the tall grass height to blur the threshold of the porch into the land, and all non-structural walls are given the capability to swing outward to maximize an open expanse toward the horizon.

The modularity of the cabin's framed bay structure allows interchangable room components to be strategically inserted and arranged based on the circulation preference of the owner, customizing hierarchies of interior and exterior space. A reading place and hearth give way to more deck area, while the kitchen and private bed and bath occupy a greater interior footprint as needed. The concept of the residence as a sequence of cartidges underlines the kit-of-parts mentality of a retreat which treads lightly on its landscape.
