This project stems from my thesis study, Layer / Mask. In the tradition of the First Nations, and of indigenous people across the world, these animistic portraits are an experiment to test a therianthropic interpretation of Mircea Eliade's Shaman: he who "is believed to cure, like all doctors, and to perform miracles of the fakir type, like all magicians ... But beyond this, he is a psychopomp, and he may also be a priest, mystic, and poet". The study progresses as a series of analytic overlays of a human and the animal they feel most akin to. The result is a set of stereographic anaglyphs which can both distinguish and unite the individual identities with their respective zoomorphic tutelary spirits.
