anatomy of a wall
genius loci
venice, italy (14 of 14)
Walls provide a crucial component of my architectural perception: opacity. The solid wall has protected man since the beginning, and the constructed wall has elevated the act of containment to an art form. As they are drawn, traced on the site, and built, these measurable barriers become a physical manifestation of the architect's line. A good wall carries the marks of weather, shows proof of its making and alteration, and divides light and space as necessary. Whether to support a building, or simply to hold itself up, the creation of the enclosure has become ingrained in my subconsious as the central architectural act. These photos are a record of found walls — vertical surfaces at a certain moment in time.
